It’s quite common to feel a bit stuck deciding what your interior style is, when style variations and ongoing trends keep changing, it can be confusing, especially if you haven’t thought about it before. What if you like different aspects of several styles? How do you include all those aspects into one style? How can I be sure it’s a big mix?
Do this one thing to get unstuck and get clear on what your style is:
STOP asking everyone else what they think you should do to style your home!
Let’s face it, if you don’t know what you like (yet), how on earth will 5 or 145 strangers in social media groups know what you like? Even your mum, sister and family members won’t know exactly what you like.
Please, do yourself a favour and stop asking others their opinion of what they think you like.
Understand this: your home is a direct reflection of You: your taste, your style, your family, your life and your lifestyle. You are the main ingredient and secret sauce in your home and in styling your home.
But how do I get unstuck?
As an Interior Designer of 20+ years my job is to help my clients define what their unique style is. I help them uncover what makes their heart sing and what a happy home means and feels to them to be able to style their home. I have seen many clients who were initially stuck on their style, learn how to discover and fine tune their style, with a helping hand, and listen within themselves to what they like and connect back to their intuition; they listen to their heart.

1. Stop asking other opinions of what your style should be
– Ask to see what others did in their home for inspiration and to see how it fits for you and your home. Just don’t ask them what you should do.
- Start asking yourself what makes your heart sing
– Look at the styles you do like and begin to understand what specifically you like, what you don’t like and narrow down your choices, heart first
3. Make friends with your intuition
– Learn to start trusting your gut feeling (again). Ask yourself something you already know is true and then confirm it using your gut or intuition. Feel the answer in your stomach, not your head, this helps give you clarity and certainty
- It takes practice
– The more work you do to narrow down your likes and dislikes, understanding what truly makes you happy and feel great, the closer you come to being so. A quick fix is only temporary, practice until you are sure, because you’re worth it!
- Be Your Own Vision
– As you gain clarity with your style preferences, make a vision board to help you create your dream home view. Seeing your choices together you will be able to narrow down ideas even more, and, have a clearer view of your dream home style – go for it.
