Uniquely You!

How to Update Your Home Using Existing Flooring

When updating or renovating your home, you may find items prohibitively expensive to replace which means a change to your dream home plans.  Existing flooring can be awkward, so here is an example of how I’ve helped a client resolve their problem and still create a home they love.

My Client – Interior Design

Nicole, a long-standing client, wanted to update her home after her 2nd marriage. She wanted to remove traces of the past, refresh the home, add a new style and make new memories. Their couples style is modern contemporary moving from Heritage, but after removing an internal wall for open plan living the bathroom was visible to living areas showing the old style burgundy and beige.

The Problem

How does Nicole overcome the visible burgundy and beige bathroom floor tiles when removing them is not an option?

Considerations

– The tiles were in great shape but aren’t the couples new combined style

– Replacing the tiles was not a budget option

-Tiling over the top was not a budget option

– Painting the tiles would only be a short-term fix and not a budget option

The Solution

To escape the coloured tiles, my only solution was to work with them… I selected a colour to compliment and distribute through the home taking the focus away from the bathroom colour and placing back in the living areas.

– I worked with good friend, professional painter Doc O’Toole at Bowral Painter Decorator, to find the best colour to complement the existing tile and integrate the latest colour trends. https://www.bowralpainterdecor…

– We painted two feature walls which also helped define the lounge and dining spaces.

– In the kitchen the feature colour was behind a clear glass splash back and allows future colour changes by removing the glass to paint the wall behind it.

– We used cream, not white, on the walls, curtains, and floor tiles for a cohesive look and feel throughout the home.

Nicole and her partner still love their renovated home and the flow from one room to the next. They love the colour pop, new bathroom styling and how the bathroom is a refreshed feature in their home.

Finding the right solution is usually a process of discussion and debate until everyone feels comfortable with what the end result will be. It is not to be rushed but given careful consideration as your decision remains until your next renovation. This example show that you can work with existing flooring with a little redirection without loosing your style and still have the home you have been dreaming of – there is always a creative solution.

Comment below on what your biggest challenge is – it is probably more common than you know, and I’d love to open the Q & A to help you solve it.
