How To Clear Your Home Styling Mind Block

Have you ever noticed how over thinking can crush your ideas?

You know what I’m talking about, when you just want to make your home feel inspired with your creative and juicy DIY projects; you dream of making gorgeous cushion covers in fun fabrics or painting an accent wall in a hot colour or making a trending wood trimmed lampshade you’ve see in the shops.

It sounds divine but somehow your fabulous idea gets overtaken by your brain because it says:

‘No wait – I think I can make it even better!’

And that’s where it sits, spinning around and around until (cue BB King) the thrill has gone, and it becomes an overthinking mind block, ugh. I know how you feel! I am updating my home with both large ‘trades people required’ jobs: gutters, floors, Ensuite, kitchen etc, and small ‘creative DIY my husband Ty and I can complete’ jobs: wall panelling, light shades, painting etc.

For me the small jobs really excite me as I can be creative, express myself and my style and see results I actually created… but that’s also when I start overthinking the results I want. What if I did this or did that instead and before you know it, the momentum gets lost and my fabulous idea ends up stuck in a holding pattern in my head.

This really drains me and when it happened recently it took me a while to realise what I was doing – overthinking!

I just felt flat and uninspired, it was as if all the fun of the activity and the amazing end result I imagined didn’t feel possible and that my home was never going to get finished. While it sounds a bit dramatic, that is how it felt and I knew I had to do something about it or else it could be months before I looked at it again with any joy.

Not surprisingly I have heard this from many clients while they try to create their treasured homes, they too become lost in their overthinking so I wanted to share my story and what I did to break free from my block and what has helped my clients. Happily, the solution is an easy one for us all…

Get out of your head and get back into your heart where your joy centre live

Refocus on what your heart wants and allow yourself to get back into your creative zone. It’s in the doing zone you find forward movement and your bliss and it’s where you can reconnect back to your initial inspiration and be reinspired. You just need to get creative by doing rather than thinking.

Tell yourself it’s time to simply start doing something creative . . . and the rest follows

Start with a simple and small project to find your creative zone again, something inexpensive super fun and super quick.  Paint a picture frame, paint a vase, rearrange your artwork throughout your home for a fresh take on things to slide back into your inspired zone. Then you will feel more confident and comfortable and ready to get your projects back on again.

As you allow your creative side to explore again, you get to decide what you do like and what you don’t like, which is the easy way to also discover and refine your interior style. This absolutely works!
