When styling your home office there are a few basic rules you can follow that will help set you up for success. Here are 8 essential tips to style your home office and create not only a successful workspace but one that motivates you, excites you and is uniquely you.
1. What’s your design style
First and foremost decide on your preferred style then add the elements of your style in your room; this includes colours, shapes, finishes, furnishings IE; the desk, shelves, notice board, storage, picture frames, artwork, seating, lighting etc. When you add an item purposefully using your design style (or brand) you will create and define a unified space unique to you.
2. Brand yourself
Consider how you wish to present, yourself, your brand and business to the world. Will you style the wall behind you for videos and video meetings or is using a green screen more appropriate / easier in your space? If you regularly make video recordings find the right background image for your business to maintain brand consistency. Also decide how often you will update your background gather brand consistent images in advance.
3. Insist on an ergonomic home office
Ensure you have quality furniture specifically for your work. Consider how you work; sit, stand, sew, paint, record videos, etc, and buy the appropriate option. An ergonomic desk, chair and workspace will yield results for you in comfort, productivity and your business success.
4. Align your desk with natural light
Good lighting is vital for reducing eye strain, staying focused and creating a productive workspace. Ensure ceiling lights don’t create shadows when writing and if so add task desk lighting if needed. Add specific lighting for video meetings and recording with ring lights etc, at the front, sides and behind you. Search lighting setup guides and create a template for quick and easy setups to achieve consistent recordings.
5. Organize your space
A cluttered workspace is distracting and difficult to work in. Invest in desk and drawer organizers, simple filing systems and storage to keep your workspace tidy, organized and clutter free, then declutter weekly.
6. Make your wall space visual
Utilise walls to hang a bulletin board, calendar, whiteboard etc, for important notes, dates, goals, or at a glance reminders. Remember to select all items according to your preferred style or brand and consider what may be on view when holding video meetings and recordings.
7. Create your own inspiration
Add personal achievements to help stay focused on your goals. Display your qualification, certificates, trophies, and awards to motivate and inspire yourself. But don’t stop there, add quotes, artwork, wallpaper, photos, paint the walls, collections of your work, etc. Consider adding scents and sound with a reed or oil diffuser, incense, etc, or listen to music as appropriate. Try motivational tunes by your favourite artists to impower yourself and start your day with good vibes or spa type music in the background or hang a wind chime by your window.
8. Bring in nature
Plants improve air quality are calming and lovely to view. Choose low maintenance plants, if you aren’t a natural green thumb, to help both you and your plants thrive together; or set a weekly watering alarm. Alternatively splurge on fresh flowers once week to add colour and scents.
Remember, the key to styling your home office for success is to create a space that is functional, productive, and inspirational for you.
